Peter Lee is/was a student of mine, as I am a student of Peter's. Lee was one of five artists asked to compose a sound bed to accompany this video by Brian Stansfield as part of the anniversary of the Artisphere in Rosslyn, Va. Lee's soundtrack reinvigorates the somewhat exhausted trope of space travel to draw a critical distinction between The Future as promised by a century-long infatuation with the ambitions of science fiction and The Future as delivered by a State-Security appartus whose lifeblood is interminable conflict. As has been previously discussed on these pages, The Future should no longer be understood as a temporal region, but rather as a hastily concocted marketing scheme under which our lives have been stolen, dismembered, and the fragments sold back to us in discrete little shrink-wrapped packages.
Allahu Akbar!
